The Free-Trade Miracle

Published by Project Syndicate

Global free trade provides the greatest opportunity to improve human welfare over the next decade and a half. It has already helped lift more than a billion people out of poverty over the past quarter-century. Lowering trade barriers even more could double average incomes in the poorest parts of the world over the next 15 years. Yes, there are costs to free trade that must be better addressed; but the costs are vastly outweighed by the benefits. Yet, in rich countries today, the mood has turned against free trade. That is a tragedy.

El milagro del libre comercio

Published by Project Syndicate

Wunderbarer Freihandel

Published by Project Syndicate

Published by Project Syndicate

Největší příležitost zlepšit během příští dekády a půl blahobyt lidí představuje globální volný obchod. V průběhu uplynulého čtvrtstoletí už pomohl vyzvednout z chudoby víc než miliardu lidí. Další snížení obchodních bariér by v nejchudších částech světa ještě během příštích 15 let mohlo zdvojnásobit průměrné příjmy.

Debate on poverty eradication

Published by The Daily Star

The project 'Bangladesh Priorities' set out to have a conversation on what is best for Bangladesh. In that spirit, I welcome the commentary from Nick Beresford of UNDP Bangladesh on September 29. His concerns merit a considered response. Copenhagen Consensus and partner BRAC worked closely with more than 30 academics from Bangladesh and abroad – from Dhaka University to Yale – to examine 76 investments and interventions including TB treatment, supplements in pregnancy, delaying child marriage with education, and different kinds of cash transfers. More than thirty peer-...

Take those organic food claims with a grain of salt

Published by The Australian

With more than 17 million hectares devoted to growing certified organic produce — more than any other nation — Australia is a “green food” economic powerhouse. There’s big money being made in organic dairy, fruit, vegetables and processed foods. Australian organics exports more than doubled in value between 2012 and 2014, and the entire industry is worth more than $1.7 billion. On the surface, it seems like the whole planet gains from this enterprise: organic farming, we assume, is better for consumer health, animals and the planet. As with many assumptions, this...

Published by isty z naszego sadu

About Those Non-Disappearing Pacific Islands

Published by The Wall Street Journal

Once a year or so, journalists from major news outlets travel to the Marshall Islands, a remote chain of volcanic islands and coral atolls in the Pacific Ocean, to report in panicked tones that the island nation is vanishing because of climate change. Their dispatches are often filled with raw emotion and suggest that residents are fleeing atolls swiftly sinking into the sea. Yet new research shows that this is not the entire—or even an accurate—picture. Acknowledging this doesn’t mean that global warming isn’t real, or that world leaders and scientists shouldn’t...

Sustainable Development Goals – Are There too Many?

Published by BBC More or Less

It is now a year since the UN set its new Sustainable Development Goals to try to make the world a better place. They include 17 goals and a massive 169 targets on subjects like disease, education and governance. But some people like Bjorn Lomborg are saying that there are just too many and they are too broad, and left like that will never achieve anything. Is he right? Is there a better way to make the world better and stop some countries lagging behind?
